Cyphaspis - .87" (2.2 cm)

Cyphaspis trilobites come from the Devonian formations near Jbel Oufaten, Morocco—one of the world’s most renowned regions for exquisitely preserved trilobites. Belonging to the family AulacopleuridaeCyphaspis is a small but distinctive genus recognized for its spiny ornamentation, rounded cephalon, and raised glabellum that give it a helmet-like profile.

Among its most striking features are its bulbous, stalked compound eyes, which would have provided a wide field of vision—an essential adaptation for detecting predators or prey while partially buried in sediment on the seafloor. These trilobites lived as benthic scavengers in the shallow Devonian seas of Gondwana, where their spines likely offered protection and camouflage amid a thriving ecosystem of corals, crinoids, and early fish.
